INCOME GENERATION PROGRAM
- Poultry program was introduced to our area, by the effort of ICDS. The
Tamilnadu Poultry Development Corporation (TAPCO) was approached, The
total beneficiaries were 50 in numbers. The backyard of the beneficiaries’ house
was used for erection of thatched shed, to accommodate the birds.
- Goatery scheme was launched at selected villages, like Illalur, Thandalam and
Vengaleri; 20 beneficiaries took part in this scheme.
- Petty loans ranging from Rs.1000/- to Rs.2500/- was made available to 100
persons from 19 villages.
- Through Dairy Co-operative Society of Thaiyur village, 150 persons availed
sheep loans.
- All the vocational training and skill training programs conducted by ICDS, were
aimed at improving the skills of the participants with the ultimate goal of
acquiring self sufficiency in their income level. Thus, through various schemes
mentioned under skill / vocational training section of this site, more than 5000
persons availed necessary expertise, training and knowledge, which fetched
them march towards getting additional income sources.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM:
- Non formal education centres for illiterate children were initially started in 24
villages from thirupporur Block. This was then extended though another project
to Kattankolathur Block villages and though this program another 20 villages
were adopted.
- In some villages tuition centres were also started.
- The National Adult Education Program was launched by the then Prime Minister
of India Shri. Morarji Desai. This was successfully implemented in various parts
of Tamilnadu, ICDS was also selected for this program and at Kattankolathur
village 24 villages were allotted, wherein the adult illiterate persons were
enrolled and literacy education was imparted to them in their own villages.
- As the above non formal education programme was the first action program,
implemented by ICDS, there was a need to promote educational primers for this
illiterate young students. The director of ICDS, M. Xavier Chandra kumar
attempted to formulate new and novel methods for educating this category of
populace. He stayed 35 days with these children in the villages and found new
methods for teaching literacy initially. One by one the following books with full
of pictures along with self learning exercises were designed:-
- Literecy Made Easy – In Tamil
- Science, based on life situations – in Tamil
- Health, through easy ways of learning – in Tamil
- Learning numeral, easily – in Tamil
- Leanring though thinking – in Tamil
- Empowerement through ‘Panchayat Raj’- in Tamil

GENERAL PROGRAM
Road Safety Program: Road safety is concerned with reducing the numbers and the
consequences of accidents on the roads. “Safety for all” specially for the people, especially our
children traveling to schools and back is of prime importance. So, in order to achieve this objectives, the
The Institute (ICDS) was proud to organize road safety awareness programmes, utilizing the financial
resources, as well as moral support, provided by the CIRT, Govt. of India, to sensitize the different
categories of people like SHG leaders, SHG members, , Panchayat workers, especially Road cleaning
workers, School Children, Adolescent girls, Two Wheeler riders and Auto drivers and general public. The
program consisted the following components:
- Orientation to SHG leaders from Karumbakkam Area of Thirupporur Block:
- Orientation to School Children and adolescent girls in ECR zone:
- Orientation to General public, consisting of panchayat workers,
including Road Cleaning Workers and other working people and
publication of phamplet:
- Orientation to Two Wheeler riders and free Helmets distributed to Youths from
Thriupporur Block:
- Orientation to Auto Drivers and the General Public at ICDS grounds - the valedictory
program
House Construction: THADCO of Tamilnadu Government had a novel scheme for house
construction to the deserived Dalit population from Egattur village. 20 persons availed this
scheme on the guidance of ICDS. The funds allocated in the scheme was insufficient to
successfully complete. ICDS came forward to the rescue of the villagers and a part amount was
provided to them and the project construction was thus completed easily.
Cultural Program
The ICDS always undertook its welfare and development activities, preceded by motivational programs in the form of cultural events. Several kinds of programs like puppet shows, stage shows, Red noses , mimicry, street theatre were performed by our staff members. Seperate cultural troupes were also formed by our ICDS and in turn, these programs were also taught to the SHG members in the villages, to enable them to perform the same at their own centres in the villages. ICDS had thus so far performed about 500 street theatre programs in the villages.
